The recyclable stand-up pouch from the Frosch brand is the winner of the German Design Awards 2021 in the „Excellent Communications Design - Eco Design“ category! The Mainz-based manufacturing company Werner & Mertz receives this award for „outstanding design quality“, as the international jury of experts put it.

It is the world's first fully recyclable stand-up pouch made of mono-material (polyethylene) with a separable colour layer in accordance with the Cradle to Cradle principles. Around 85% of the entire packaging material is unprinted. This means that the material can be recycled for the first time without any loss of quality. However, the remaining 15 %, the printed sleeve, is also fully recyclable as it is free from adhesives and bonding agents and can therefore be reused in new applications.

„We are delighted to have won this award, which in my view recognises above all the optimal cooperation between packaging development, marketing and sales. Together, we have managed to develop a bag that is not only highly recyclable but also has an impressive design“
Immo Sander, Head of Packaging Development at Werner & Mertz

The stand-up pouch is the first packaging that fully fulfils the three objectives of Reduce-Reuse-Recycle: thanks to its 100% recyclability, it can be fed into material recycling via the Yellow Bag - the plastic therefore remains in the cycle (Recycle). In addition, the pouch saves up to 70% of packaging material compared to a bottle of the same content (Reduce). And finally, thanks to the refill packs, the original bottle can be refilled again and again (Reuse). Another special feature: 100 % of the original Frosch brand bottles are already made from used plastic from end consumer collections.

Attractive design and high user-friendliness

However, the bag is not only impressive in terms of sustainability, but also in terms of appearance and handling: it has a convenient carrying handle and a resealable spout. The brand design is still present on the front and all consumer information is listed on the back. The film of the new pouch offers an additional sensory benefit: The consumer can sniff the fragrance directly on the product without having to open the pouch. This does not result in a loss of fragrance relevant to shelf life.

The bag was developed by Mondi. The first Frosch refill bags of this type are already on the market: Washing-up liquid and hand soap refill bags. The rest of the range will be completely reorganised this year.
