„If you want to see outstandingly creative and intelligent innovations in packaging, look no further than the winners of the German Packaging Award. It is extremely remarkable that the companies in our industry are not allowing their innovative and creative power to be stopped despite the hardships caused by coronavirus, the energy crisis and supply chain problems. They are really pulling out all the stops and scrutinising every detail to continuously improve packaging and its environment and develop the best possible answers to the challenges of our time. We see remarkable solutions for cartons, tubes, bottles and crates through to displays, coatings, software and machines. There is B2B and B2C packaging, packaging materials, packaging aids and technologies that move us forward in terms of energy and resource efficiency, climate and product protection, convenience, brand perception, automation, circular economy, e-commerce and the supply chain.“

AB InBev receives packaging award for Corona Extra crate
In the „New Material“ category, the crate for the Corona Extra brand won the award. It consists of 2.2 kilograms of recycled plastic made from waste such as fishing lines, nets or ropes that no longer end up in the ocean.
The crate is made from 90 per cent recycled plastic, a large proportion of which comes from the maritime industry. Based on the original production and reuse of 208,700 crates, 82 tonnes of plastic waste from the maritime industry were calculated for Germany alone. The use of this material ensures consistent quality in the production of the crate, which also guarantees its long service life.
Syntegon wins packaging award for packaging machine
The company won over the jury with Versynta microBatch. The fully automated production cell fills and seals the smallest batches of pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical drugs.
The flexible production cell is designed for filling and closing a wide variety of containers with pharmaceutical liquids and enables a complete batch-to-batch changeover in under two hours. Syringes, cartridges and vials made of glass or plastic can be filled with virtually no product loss. The gloveless isolator with integrated air treatment reduces the risk of contamination. Versynta microBatch was honoured with the German Packaging Award 2022 in the „Packaging Machines“ category.
Spies receives award for sustainable packaging solution
Spies Kunststoffe GmbH won the German Packaging Award 2022 in the „Sustainability“ category. The use of plastic can be reduced by 30 per cent with honeycomb structure technology.
If desired, the proportion of plastic saved can be further increased and replaced with renewable raw materials. It is not possible to use recyclates in every area. Where this is not possible, it is all the more important that the packaging is recyclable and that as little material as possible is used. The company has the chance to become a gold winner at Fachpack 2022.
Nefab wins with transport packaging for batteries
Another winner in the „Sustainability“ category was Nefab. The company impressed the jury with its fibre-based and recyclable transport packaging for lithium-ion batteries.
The EdgePak Straw solution is for one-way transport of lithium-ion batteries, as it reduces both the environmental impact and the total cost of the supply chain and is easy to recycle. The concept can also be applied to other heavy products transported in demanding supply chains. Despite its fibre-based nature, the packaging design can withstand a weight of over 350 kilograms per carton and enables 1+3 stacking. In addition, the excellent solution is certified by the UN for the transport of dangerous goods.
Smurfit Kappa receives four awards at once
Packaging manufacturer Smurfit Kappa was delighted to receive four awards at this year's German Packaging Awards. The company impressed with its sustainable innovations in the Display and Digitalisation, Packaging Displays and Functionality and Convenience categories.
The SupplySmart Analyzer software records packaging and process-related data across the entire value chain and shows customers potential for optimisation and savings. This enables supply chains to be optimised and made more sustainable.
The displays for Hela and Nurofen impressed with their high visibility and long-distance effect at the PoS. The structure of the displays creates three-dimensionality and depth and is intended to arouse customers' interest in the products and further information. The LED - Life Extended Display, on the other hand, is reusable. The display can be used several times and can still bear loads of up to 25 kg.
