German packaging market shrinks by 2.4 per cent in 2024

The GADV industry statistics show clear differences in the packaging fractions.

The Joint Committee of German Packaging Manufacturers (GADV) has published its annual balance sheet for 2024. At 17.1 million tonnes, the production volume of packaging fell by 2.4% compared to the previous year, while the production value fell by 4.1% to 37.1 billion euros. Glass and paper packaging were hit particularly hard, while aluminium and plastic saw a slight increase.

The GADV industry statistics show clear differences in the packaging fractions: Aluminium packaging increased production by 1.3 percent and was the only one to also record an increase in production value of 3.8 percent. Plastic packaging increased by 1.1 per cent in terms of volume, but lost 1.5 per cent in terms of production value. In contrast, paper, cardboard and carton packaging suffered a 2.9 per cent drop in volume and a 7.8 per cent drop in value. Glass packaging fell by 2.5 per cent and its production value even dropped by 10.4 per cent. Metal packaging fell by 2.4 per cent in volume and 2.6 per cent in value.

Plastic packaging continued to account for the largest share of production value with a 44.6 per cent share. In terms of volume, packaging made of paper, cardboard and paperboard dominated the market with 47.5 per cent.

The GADV, which is supported by the industry associations Aluminium Deutschland, Bundesverband Glasindustrie, Industrievereinigung Kunststoffverpackungen, Verband Metallverpackungen and the trade associations for paper processing, represents over 80 percent of the production value of the German packaging industry with around 900 member companies. It sees itself as a joint mouthpiece for cross-material, economic policy and technical issues.
