Since the coronavirus pandemic, many people in Germany know a lot more about the production and packaging of vaccines. These are often filled in glass vials. The Düsseldorf-based glass manufacturer Gerresheimer is now investing further in its vial production, also with federal funding.
The company is expanding its capacity for glass vials at its Wertheim site in Baden-Württemberg and at two other sites in China and the USA. To date, the company has primarily supplied European demand for vials from its plants in Boleslawiec (Poland) and Chalon (France). Investments are being made in production in Wertheim to increase vial capacity by 150 million vials per year. The Düsseldorf-based company intends to create 70 new jobs for this purpose. The Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection (BMWK) is subsidising the investment as part of the federal funding of production facilities for borosilicate tubular glass and glass vials for use in vaccine production.
Dietmar Siemssen, Chairman of the Management Board of Gerresheimer AGemphasises the importance of expanding production: "We already produce almost a third of the world's glass vials. By expanding our global capacities, we are consistently realising our growth strategy. By the end of 2022, we will be the world's leading producer of glass vials and manufacture the highest quality and most innovative products."
