The member companies of Aerobal, the International Organisation of Aluminium Aerosol Can Manufacturers, have reported global deliveries totalling 6.75 billion units for 2024.
Compared to the previous year, this corresponds to an increase of 4.2 per cent. This growth, which is very remarkable considering the rather difficult economic environment, was achieved thanks to robust demand in all key market segments such as personal care and cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, food and household, according to the report.
Strong demand from all major markets
The personal care sector remains by far the most important market, accounting for around 81.5 per cent of total demand and achieving an overall increase of 4 per cent compared to 2023. Deodorants and antiperspirants remain the dominant categories here, delivering solid growth of 3 per cent. The biggest leap in the broad field of personal care shaving gels and shaving foam, with a 15 per cent increase in deliveries.
A strong impetus for the good result for aluminium aerosol cans came from the household products and technical applications segment with an impressive increase of 22.7%, which was not least due to the increased demand for air fresheners and insecticides. The pharmaceuticals and food segments also experienced significant growth with an increase in deliveries of 10 per cent and 11.5 per cent respectively.
From a geographical perspective, all markets around the world developed positively in 2024, Only on the African continent is there a decline of 5.5 per cent. The two most important markets by far remain the EU (including the UK) and North and South America. They alone account for around 72 per cent of global deliveries. Both regions together achieved significant growth of around 5.5 per cent. A considerable increase in demand of 17 per cent was reported from the Middle East region.
Most industry experts expect demand for aluminium aerosol cans to remain stable or increase in 2025, However, this may well vary from region to region. Manufacturers of aluminium cans also see additional opportunities in the development of innovative products and the possible diversification of their portfolios, for example testing new markets for non-aerosol applications such as cosmetic cans, drinks bottles and snack containers.
Industry customisation: Focus on innovation and sustainability
Despite this, the aluminium can industry and (in particular) Aerobal member companies around the world are already working hard to ensure that aerosols meet the highest environmental and sustainability targets. The focus on recyclability and compliance with regulations remains a top priority.
„The solid growth we recorded in 2024 shows that our industry is on a positive path,“ said Rob Huffman, President of Aerobal. „But as we look to the future, we need to stay focussed and be ready to tackle the challenges ahead with innovation and creativity. Regulatory pressure is increasing, particularly in the EU, and global trade dynamics - as influenced by current US trade policies, for example - pose additional challenges. However, our industry is focussing on innovation and sustainability, which will be crucial for success in 2025 and beyond.“
