GOT BAG is a young start-up with a big vision. Under the slogan „bags that create an impact for people and the world“, the Mainz-based company produces the world's first backpack made from recycled ocean plastic. The minimalist roll-top backpacks are not only intended to create a high-quality companion for travelling and everyday life, but also to actively combat the ongoing pollution of our oceans.
GOT BAG has now sold over 3,000 backpacks via its own online shop and a total of 24 tonnes of plastic from the Mediterranean and the Atlantic. With each rucksack, 3.5 kilograms of plastic are fished out of our oceans and sent on a new journey on the backs of cosmopolitan travellers.
In collaboration with a network of over 1,500 fishermen and 400 boats, GOT BAG collects plastic from the oceans. This is first melted down into pellets and then processed into yarn, which is then used to make their high-quality backpacks. A special bio-based and environmentally friendly PU coating (polyacrylate dispersions) based on COVESTRO's innovative process technology makes the backpack 100 per cent waterproof.
The roll-top backpacks are currently still available in pre-sale, but the company plans to have all backpacks available immediately from August and expects a further increase in sales figures and to convert significantly larger quantities of ocean plastic into new products. The next important step for the backpack label is to set up its own ocean clean-up centre in Indonesia. The company plans to independently organise the cleaning of plastic waste from the Indian Ocean in order to be an even more direct part of this process and ensure recycling. Further products are also planned. In the short term, a passport cover and a wallet made from recycled ocean plastic are to be launched on the market.
