LyondellBasell has received a grant totalling 40 million euros from the EU's Innovation Fund. The grant will be used to support the all-electric, large-scale demonstration plant for advanced recycling. The plant is to be built at the German site in Wesseling.
„We are delighted to receive support from the EU Innovation Fund for the development of our MoReTec technology. The investment in our first demonstration plant for advanced recycling on an industrial scale will provide us with valuable operational experience and additional technological know-how that we need to expand and fully commercialise our MoReTec technology.“
Jim Seward, EVP and Chief Innovation Officer
The company's MoReTec technology demonstrates a high degree of innovation in the Recycling of polyolefin waste for the production of pyrolysis oil and pyrolysis gas. Pyrolysis oil is a substitute for fossil materials used in polymer production. Normally, pyrolysis gas streams are consumed as fuel. With MoReTec technology, however, the Pyrolysis gas recovered which contributes to the production of polymers and replaces fossil raw materials, thus reducing CO2-emissions are reduced.
The technology includes the electrification of the nuclear reaction process so that the Plant powered entirely by renewable electricity can be realised. A scalable single-train design as well as low operating temperatures thanks to the use of catalytic converters and an innovative heat transfer design are further advantages of this differential technology. These advantages enable the MoReTec technology, High conversion rates of plastics into plastics and thus increase the recyclability of plastic waste.
The MoReTec demonstration plant in Germany will be Post-consumer plastic waste into raw material for the production of new plastic materials which are offered under the CirculenRevive brand. CirculenRevive's products offer solutions for a wide range of applications, including medical and food packaging. The MoReTec plant in Wesseling will have an annual processing capacity equivalent to the amount of plastic packaging waste generated by over 1.2 million German citizens per year. The MoReTec plant is scheduled for completion in In operation in 2026 be taken.
The Innovation Fund is one of the world's largest financing programmes for the demonstration and commercialisation of innovative low-carbon technologies. It is one of the most important instruments of the European Green Deal industrial plan and is financed by revenues from the auctioning of certificates from the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS).
