GSK Consumer Healthcare is planning to introduce recyclable toothpaste tubes for its brands. In Germany, Sensodyne ProSchmelz will be available in the new tube from July. This step is intended to make over one billion toothpaste tubes recyclable by 2025.
„The fact that we are converting a huge proportion of our toothpaste tubes to a recyclable format is a great step forward. Milestone in our sustainability mission. We will work continuously to make as many processes and products as possible sustainable,“ says Victor Geus, General Manager DACH at GSK Consumer Healthcare.
Toothpaste tubes made from Greenleaf laminate
For the launch of the new toothpaste tubes, the company is working with two global packaging companies, Albéa and EPL Global. With their help, the toothpaste tubes can be converted from aluminium barrier laminates to Greenleaf and Platina laminates. These laminates have passed the recyclability tests of the European RecyClass and the US Association of Plastic Recyclers (APR). This means that the Tubes are recyclable and compatible with existing recycling processes.
„We have committed to making all our product packaging recyclable or reusable by 2025, as far as quality and safety allow. This is just one part of our ongoing sustainability journey as we work to overcome the social and environmental barriers to everyday health.“ Sarah MacDonald, Vice President Sustainability at GSK Consumer Healthcare
Together with retailers and dental professionals, the company is working to drive the growth of more sustainable options in oral care products worldwide. For example, the first sustainable toothbrush was launched in Germany at the beginning of 2021: The Dr.Best Bamboo Interdent will be made from sustainably grown bamboo, has a biodegradable handle and plastic-free packaging made predominantly from recycled cardboard.
Plastic-free alternative
With its new packaging design, the brand is also a plastic-free alternative for the viewing window and uses the renewable plant component cellulose.
In addition, as a founding partner of the World Dental Federation's (FDI) Sustainability in Dentistry Initiative, the company is now working to reduce the environmental impact of dentistry and the dental industry. GSK Consumer Healthcare's sustainability initiatives support the new company-wide commitment, Climate-neutral by 2030 to become.
