Heidelberg celebrates its 175th anniversary

The Group is pursuing a clear growth strategy, focussing on packaging and digital printing, lifecycle products, new industrial sectors and green technologies.

On 11 March 1850, the bell foundry and machine factory Hemmer, Hamm & Co. was founded in Frankenthal - the nucleus of today's Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg). Since then, the company has developed into a leading supplier in the printing industry.

„Anyone who is successful over such a long period of time and leaves a lasting mark on the industry is a strong testimony to their innovative strength,“ explains Jürgen Otto, Chairman of the Management Board of Heidelberg. „We want to maintain this leading position in the future.“

Future strategy: growth in packaging and digital printing

Heidelberg is focussing on targeted growth in its core areas:

Display

  • Packaging printingAbout 50 per cent of sales already come from this segment. Sustainable packaging solutions made from fibre-based materials are driving the business forward.
  • Digital printing: According to the company, the market volume for digital printing solutions will grow from 5 to 7.5 billion euros. Heidelberg has significantly expanded its offering in this area.
  • Lifecycle products and serviceHeidelberg operates a dense network of Service network with a presence in 170 countries.

Automation and hybrid print production

Modern production solutions increase the competitiveness of print shops:

  • Prinect Touch Free WorkflowAI-supported software optimises production processes and increases efficiency.
  • Hybrid print productionOffset and digital printing solutions are combined automatically in order to respond flexibly to customer requirements.

Expansion into new industrial sectors

In addition to its core business, Heidelberg is investing in new growth segments:

  • Green TechnologiesExpansion of the business divisions Charging infrastructure for electromobility and Hydrogen technology
  • High-precision mechanical engineering and automation technology

By the 2028/2029 financial year, Heidelberg expects a Additional growth potential of over 300 million euros.

Anniversary celebrations and outlook

Heidelberg celebrates its anniversary with a Festival week in June 2025 at the largest production site Wiesloch-Walldorf. In addition to family days for employees, an international industry event will also take place.
