Heinz is introducing a 100 per cent recyclable mono-material closure for its squeeze bottles in 2022. The company is thus taking a further step towards making all packaging worldwide recyclable, reusable or compostable by 2025.
The mono-material cap was developed after eight years of research and development involving „more than 185,000 man-hours and an investment of $1.2 million“ to find a suitable replacement cap for the ketchup bottles, of which One billion units worldwide in 2020 were sold.
According to its own information, Heinz has a total of 45 different designs, which were printed in-house using a 3D printer. Once the prototypes had been created, a rigorous testing process followed to ensure that the closure met the high quality standards.
Mono-material cap for tomato ketchup and BBQ sauce
Heinz Tomato Ketchup and Heinz BBQ Sauce will be the first varieties to be packaged in the new cap. The mono-material closure will be from 2022 worldwide introduced, starting in Europe.
Until now, sauce bottles were fitted with a flexible valve that dispensed the ideal amount of ketchup per squeeze, but was difficult to recycle. The new closure now dispenses the same amount of tomato ketchup, but is made from a recyclable mono-material.

Heinz has made a commitment, Reduce packaging waste, wherever possible. The introduction of the new closures is part of the company's pledge to make 100 per cent of its packaging recyclable, reusable or compostable by 2025.
