HelloFresh, a global provider of cooking boxes, is now using paper cooler bags for the shipping packaging of goods that require refrigeration. The new bags are made from recycled paper and, according to the company, can simply be disposed of in the paper bin.
The introduction of paper cooler bags in Germany, Austria and Switzerland is part of the company's sustainability strategy and is intended to help further reduce the use of plastic in the shipping packaging of the cooking boxes.
„Our maxim is to only package what absolutely needs to be packaged. But this must not be at the expense of food quality. We have to use packaging to ensure that the ingredients arrive at our customers' homes undamaged and chilled. That is why we are constantly working on Balance between safe shipping and its ecological impact to optimise our processes. This includes reducing the volume of packaging and utilising recyclable or already recycled materials,“ says Nils Herrmann, Managing Director of HelloFresh Germany and Austria.
The paper cooler bags will be replacing the paper bags in Germany and Austria from September and in Switzerland from October the cooler bags made of PET. The changeover will reduce the amount of plastic used in all HelloFresh cooking box packaging by around 58 per cent.
Foodstuffs requiring refrigeration, such as dairy products, fish or meat, are packed in paper bags for dispatch. cooled with ice packs, that comply with the legal requirements and the temperature management concept (DIN SPEC 91360).
