Henkel Adhesive Technologies was founded 100 years ago because, after the end of the First World War, the occupation of the Rhine and Ruhr threatened a supply shortage of adhesives at its home base in Düsseldorf, which were needed to seal its own product packaging, for example for detergents. The company therefore started in 1922 with the Development and production of paper, cardboard and parcel adhesives for own use. With the construction and commissioning of its own glue factory on 26 June 1923, the company also launches the Sale of adhesive products to neighbouring companies. The first products included the painter's glue Mala and the wallpaper paste Tapa, both based on potato flour.
Inventions and transformations
Adhesive Technologies has pioneering work worldwide through patented inventions, Innovative strength and strategic acquisitions achieved. Famous inventions include, for example, the first Pritt glue stick in 1969, which was inspired by the twist mechanism of the lipstick and revolutionised paper crafting. In 2001, Pritt was awarded the Space-Proof„ quality seal“ and was transported to the International Space Station ISS.

Over the past 100 years, adhesives have been used in a wide variety of projects. For example 1987 Ceresit products used in the renovation of the Great Wall of China. And in 2015, Henkel developed an adhesive to professionally reattach the broken beard of Tutankhamun's famous death mask.

Sustainable solutions
The central focus of Adhesive Technologies' innovation activities is on the Development of sustainable solutions for its customers. The division works on products that optimise Resource efficiency in production and during use over the entire life cycle and which are based on natural formulations or recyclates. In addition, the company offers a Growing portfolio for recyclability for example, packaging or consumer goods and the reparability of everyday products.
In 2022, the business unit opened the Inspiration Centre Düsseldorf at its home location. In the innovation centre with more than 30 laboratories, over 650 Henkel experts are working on highly effective and sustainable solutions for adhesives, sealants and functional coatings. At the same time, the building serves as a global customer centre, where the entire technology portfolio is presented and collaboration with customers from over 800 industry segments is intensified. In 2023, the division will gradually open another global innovation centre in Shanghai.
