Following an investment in the Husum plant last year, Metsä Board now announces that the capacity expansion at the plant is making progress. Production capacity is set to increase by 200,000 tonnes per year to meet the demand for sustainable packaging materials.

The detailed planning for the expansion of the current folding boxboard capacity and the construction work have already been underway for several months. The cartonboard machine will be extended by 54 metres, which will also require an extension to the basement of the machine hall. The extension of the folding boxboard machine was planned on the basis of simulations and 3D models. The drying area of the board machine will be modernised and the reel handling fully automated. There are also several Infrastructure improvements to enable smooth operations at the site. All important machine purchases for the project have already been made, with Valmet being the most important machine supplier.

„We built a building within a building so that we could safely carry out the extensive demolition work and continue production on the BM1 at the same time.“

The project organisation of Metsä Board currently consists of 24 employees, with a number of people also working part-time on the project. Additional resources for installation management and commissioning are planned for a later date. Around 30 contractors are currently working on site, mainly in the area of construction work. The Commissioning of the renewed carton machine is scheduled for autumn 2023 The full production capacity is expected to be reached by the end of 2025.

„The team spirit is very good - we are a committed team with a positive attitude. The co-operation with the machine suppliers and key advisors has worked smoothly. The upcoming fully automated reel handling is impressive and will enable smooth production processes. We have carried out a simulation to ensure that there are no bottlenecks in the system. The operators can fully concentrate on the performance of the machine and the quality of the carton.“
