The Hochwald dairy group is setting an example for more climate protection and is launching UHT milk in SIG Terra aluminium-free packaging. The innovation saves up to 34 percent CO₂ compared to conventional cartons with an aluminium layer.
In response to the increasing demand for more environmentally friendly packaging solutions, Hochwald is now using SIG's aseptic carton packaging without an aluminium layer for its UHT milk products. The SIG Terra Alu-free material used consists of 82 per cent FSC-certified cartonboard and reduces the carbon footprint of the packaging material by up to 34 per cent compared to SIG's standard material with an aluminium barrier, according to the information provided.
SIG was the first supplier in the industry to develop completely aluminium-free carton packaging for aseptic applications, according to Neuhausen. To date, over 3.6 billion litres of food have already been filled in this packaging. Thanks to the simplified material structure, the aluminium-free cartons not only offer environmental benefits, but also provide reliable protection without refrigeration over longer periods of time.
Communication at the POS: making sustainability visible
Hochwald is focusing on a clear consumer approach for the launch: the advantages of the SIG Terra aluminium-free packaging are communicated prominently on the outside of the milk cartons. The aim is to make the more sustainable choice visible directly on the shelf.
Joint climate target: net zero by 2050
Both SIG and Hochwald have signed up to the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi). Both companies are committed to reducing their greenhouse gas emissions and are pursuing the goal of achieving net climate neutrality by 2050.
