Hoffmann has expanded its plant in the Netherlands with a special can production line for powdered baby milk products. The new line runs in a separate zone to ensure compliance with food standards. It was built for a new customer in the baby milk sector.

The global supplier of packaging for infant formula, food and luxury foods supplies its cans in accordance with the BRC/IoP GS 6 and ISO 9001 production standards, as required for important sales markets such as the EU, the USA and China. The Four-million-euro investment enables capacity expansion for baby milk powder cans by 118 million units.

The plant currently produces cans with a diameter of 99 mm and a volume of up to 400 grams. The newly built room also offers Space for a second production line and enables further growth.

The company also works Hoffmann actively with partners on the Roadmap for environmentally friendly steel packaging, produced with green energy. The company is offering a limited certified quantity for its cans in 2022 and is participating in a national decarbonisation programme.

The company also installed a 12,000 square metre solar system on the factory roof in 2021, which will generate around 60 per cent of the tinplate factory's electricity requirements in Thun.

Hoffmann also offers a RecyCan portfolio, which has just been honoured with the IPA Innovation Award 2021. RecyCan is made from 100 per cent recycled steel and can be 100 per cent recycled. According to the company, this represents a genuine market innovation, namely to close the cycle of steel packaging via a separate production route.

Capacity expansion through canning line

The capacity expansion and the new products are also accompanied by a Reorganisation of the customer service team accompanied. Hoffmann has reorganised the management structure across both plants in order to ensure that the two can production sites in Switzerland and the Netherlands are aligned. Packaging expert Karin Paldanius will join Hoffmann as Director Sales, Tins, on 1 February 2022.

„The new can line for baby milk powder at our plant in the Netherlands consolidates Hoffmann's position as a speciality manufacturer in the metal packaging sector. Over the next decade, we will continue to take responsibility for environmental issues and invest heavily in the decarbonisation of our production facilities to reduce our overall impact as part of the steel packaging supply chain.“ Andreas Geiger, Managing Director of the company's Metal Business Unit
