Huhtamaki and Syntegon have developed and launched Push Tab, a sustainable push-through tablet packaging based on renewable paper.

For the new development Huhtamaki The conventional combination of thermoformed plastic blister and sealed aluminium foil has been replaced by a paper-based solution. Push Tab is thus the First paper-based blister pack on the market. It is made from renewable FSC-certified paper and fulfils the strict safety requirements for pharmaceutical packaging.

Push Tab is the first blister solution made of paper

The company developed the sustainable blister solution together with Syntegon for the pharmaceutical and healthcare industry. The material is produced with the paper form technology moulded and processed on Syntegon machines.

The new push-through tablet packaging made from Push Tab paper consists of more than 75 per cent paper-based material with good stretch properties, sourced from FSC-certified suppliers in Europe.

The material is equipped with a special barrier and sealing layer equipped. The innovative barrier coating technology has made it possible to seal the sustainable paper packaging without compromising safety, functionality or protective properties compared to conventional mono-PVC (polyvinyl chloride) blisters. At the same time, it is possible to easily push through the tablet without damaging the product inside.

„We are proud to introduce a more sustainable packaging solution for tablets for the healthcare sector, which has high growth potential. European sales of flexible packaging in the pharmaceuticals category are estimated to be worth €1.1 billion in 2020, of which around 80 per cent on blister packs are no longer necessary. We look forward to helping our customers capitalise on these opportunities with Push Tab paper, which has been developed for the circular economy and is the first sustainable alternative for this type of packaging.“ Fabio Daidone, Sales Manager, Flexible Packaging, Huhtamaki

The German Packaging Institute has just awarded Push Tab Paper the German Packaging Award 2021 honoured for sustainability.
