Ice cream packaging is double winner of the German Packaging Impact Design Award

The winners of this year's German Packaging Impact Design Award (PIDA) have been announced. A packaging solution for an ice lolly was honoured twice.

The winners of this year's German Packaging Impact Design Award (PIDA) have been announced. A packaging solution for an ice lolly was honoured twice.

The „Krystal Kream“ competition entry by design student Hagen Neugebauer from the Stuttgart Media University (HdM Stuttgart) was honoured with the PIDA Gold Award. The winning concept is a Packaging for vegan Italian ice cream on a stick. The jury rated the concept as groundbreaking for the future in terms of material and design. The packaging was also honoured with the Highest level of innovation The jury awarded the prize for „a completely new packaging concept for the relevant market segment“.

With his PIDA Gold Award at national level, Neugebauer automatically qualifies for the final on 27 September at the Luxe Pack in Monaco. There the International profitsr will be chosen. The winner of PIDA Germany will face the winners of the other three semi-finals: from France, Sweden, the UK and the USA.

Two more award-winning packaging solutions 

The Highest Level of User Friendliness Award went to the contribution „hey Ocean!“ by Nadine Voll and Judith Kellermann from HdM Stuttgart for their packaging solution for bath balls.

According to the jury, „the packaging tells a story about the product and takes the consumer on a journey from start to finish. It utilises different functions to accompany the product. A packaging solution that, together with the product, surprises and delights the buyer at all stages of use.“

In terms of sustainability, the winner was a packaging solution for reusable razors. Vanessa Hoffer, also from the Stuttgart Media University, received the Highest Level of Sustainability Award for their contribution „Miss Fortune“.

Here, the otherwise standard plastic blister has been replaced by a Pure cardboard solution replaced. For the jury, the new packaging for reusable razors also scored points for its „Visual and haptic perception“. When designing the packaging, the overall aesthetic effect with graphic elements, embossing and lacquer effects was taken into account, as were the aspects of product fixation and tamper and child safety.

This means that this year all German winning entries by students from the Stuttgart Media University. The winners were selected by a jury of prominent industry experts who were impressed by this year's entries.

„The concepts submitted by the teams were all extremely exciting and well thought out. We discussed each competition entry in detail and at length before coming to a decision in the individual categories. The participants can be very proud of themselves. What they have achieved under the exceptional circumstances is fantastic.“ Helmut Sieber von Edelmann, chairman of this year's jury at PIDA Germany

Packaging Impact Design Award

BillerudKorsnäs organises the competition in cooperation with leading universities and design colleges in Germany, France, Great Britain, Sweden and the USA. „With PIDA We want to drive forward the development of packaging design and at the same time establish a meeting place for the industry and universities,“ explains Anders Gathu, Marketing Manager at BillerudKorsnäs.
