Tethered caps, which remain permanently on the bottle after opening and during use, will soon be available to consumers across Europe. A multinational drinks manufacturer has introduced tethered caps from Affaba & Ferrari, a TriMas Packaging brand, for its iced tea brand.

In July 2024, the EU Directive on Tethered caps come into force in full. It states that closures must be permanently affixed to single-use beverage packaging, including composite packaging such as beverage cartons with a volume of up to three litres. A global beverage manufacturer has now worked with the new Tethered Cap 1P23 from Affaba & Ferrari has found a solution to fulfil both the forthcoming directive and its own sustainability targets.

The Trimas Packaging-The Affaba & Ferrari brand is the manufacture of precision fasteners which are used in the food and beverage industry as well as in agrochemical and industrial applications. Its latest product, the Tethered Cap, helps companies fulfil their sustainability goals.

"Although bottle caps can be recycled, they are often lost, thrown away or simply end up in the rubbish. The design of our tethered caps makes a significant contribution to ensuring that this no longer happens."

The new cap is attached to a safety ring with a tab, which enables an ideal opening position so that the consumer can easily drink from the bottle. At the same time, this is guaranteed, that the cap cannot come off the container. In addition, the innovative, lightweight closure with horizontal hinge is suitable for aseptic filling and is fully customisable to strengthen the customer's brand identity.

Entire beverage portfolio with tethered caps

The drinks manufacturer has already launched the tethered cap on the Italian market - initially with its iced tea brand. With the introduction of the new caps, the company has also reduced the amount of plastic required for each iced tea bottle cap by 14 per cent. This is just one of the first steps in the company's strategy to promote a circular economy for its plastic products.
