Together with 12 European partner companies, Mondi has launched the „Paper Sacks Go Circular Spain“ initiative. The aim of the initiative is to promote the recyclability of paper sacks, particularly in the construction industry, and to significantly reduce the amount of waste in this sector.
In Spain, over 30 1TP3 tonnes of the total waste generated comes from the construction industry. Currently, the recycling rate of construction waste is only around 48 %. The new initiative aims to increase this rate and improve the recycling process of used paper bags. These sacks are often used to transport materials such as cement and plaster, making them a key component of the construction industry. „Paper Sacks Go Circular Spain“ plans to optimise the recovery of paper sacks and the reuse of valuable fibres in production.
Carlos Martinez Ezquerra, Circular Economy Manager at Mondi, emphasised: „Our initiative is a decisive step towards improving the recyclability of paper bags and establishing a closed loop in the construction industry. We are working with partners to scale the model and expand the solution to other countries and materials.“

The initiative includes working groups that deal with process optimisation, traceability and training. The aim is to raise awareness of the benefits of recycling while implementing concrete measures to minimise waste. „Paper Sacks Go Circular Spain“ is expected to be a blueprint for other European countries facing similar challenges.
In addition to increasing the recycling rate, the initiative also aims to reduce CO2 emissions in the construction industry through more efficient processes and thus contribute to climate targets. By working together with companies from different areas of the value chain, „Paper Sacks Go Circular Spain“ aims to develop sustainable solutions and reduce the environmental impact in the long term.
