The Hanover-based start-up Papair has received the first international patent for its paper-based bubble wrap, laying the foundation for the development of a global licence model.
Papair develops sustainable paper-based packaging solutions. The start-up has now been granted its first international patent for its paper-based bubble wrap PapairWrap. The patent covers the manufacturing technology, the production process and the machine developed for this purpose. The grant by the Australian Patent Office is an important step for the company and lays the foundation for the development of an international licence model. The European patent is in the final stages of being granted in the course of the year.
Since its foundation five years ago, Papair has been pursuing the goal of replacing plastic packaging with a completely paper-based and recyclable alternative. The products are Plastic-free, recyclable, resource-saving and suitable for different areas of use - from e-commerce to industrial packaging.
„This patent is a decisive milestone for us. It not only confirms the innovative strength of our solution, but also means that our technology can be used worldwide for local production. Especially with regard to supply chains, sustainability requirements and legal framework conditions, this creates advantages for partner companies and markets worldwide.“Christopher Feist, CEO and Co-Founder of Papair
The allocation of On-site manufacturing licences is a central component of Papair GmbH's international business model. Through Decentralised production emissions from transport, lower barriers to market entry and facilitate integration into existing local value chains. „With patent protection, we can now approach partners in international markets - and at the same time secure our technology in the long term,“ Feist continues.

The first international patent grant is not only a technical success, but also a symbolic one: „We are started without an industry background, with the idea of rethinking packaging. That we now hold an internationally recognised property right from Hanover, shows how much substance there is in our development - and what contribution we can make to the transformation of the packaging industry in the long term,“ says Feist.
In addition to the PapairWrap roll product, the company now also distributes pre-cut sheets (PapairSheet), padded bags (PapairBag) and padded cushions (PapairFill). Production takes place at the company's own site in Lower Saxony.
