Metsä Board wants to modernise a folding carton machine at its Simpele site. The company, which is part of the Metsä Group, has made an investment decision to this end. The renewal of the machine is intended to improve the quality of the folding boxboard and increase production efficiency.

The investment enables the Replacing fossil fuels in cartonboard production and supports Metsä Board's goal of fossil-free production in all mills by the end of 2030. The company already announced in March that it will launch an investment programme to modernise the Simpele board mill, which will be implemented gradually over the next ten years. The planned investment programme also includes Erenewals in mechanical pulp production, in the refining area and a new power plant. The company has not yet made any investment decisions.

The renewal will Increase the plant's production capacity by around 10,000 tonnes, This will increase the annual production capacity of Simpele Folding Boxboard to around 310,000 tonnes. The Simpele mill produces high-quality lightweight folding boxboard, mainly for food and pharmaceutical packaging. The investment will start immediately and is expected to be completed in the second half of 2025. The investment value amounts to around EUR 60 million, spread over the period 2024-2026.

This investment will improve the quality of folding boxboard that fulfils the most stringent requirements, especially food and pharmaceutical packaging.
