Metsä Board is planning major investments in its mill in Simpele, Finland, to increase production efficiency and reduce its carbon footprint. The modernisation includes new technologies and is part of the strategy to achieve fossil-free production by 2030.

The Finnish company Metsä Board has announced a comprehensive modernisation of its plant in Simpele. With an investment volume of around 60 million euros, the plant is to be modernised by the end of 2025. Product quality and sustainability of cartonboard production improved will be realised. The measures include the modernisation of the pre-drying process and the installation of a state-of-the-art coating system. These are intended to improve the print quality and visual consistency of the MetsäBoard Classic cartonboard and to achieve a Enabling the switch to fossil-free production.

Markku Leskelä, Senior Vice President of Development at Metsä Board, explained that the modernisation represents an important milestone in achieving the goal of fossil-free production by 2030. At the same time, the plant will maintain its leading position in the areas of Food and healthcare packaging expand further.

The work on the plant, which was announced last year, is proceeding according to plan. The majority of the modernisation measures will be completed during a planned maintenance shutdown in September 2025 implemented. To minimise interruptions, the company works closely with its customers to ensure constant product availability.
