Jokey presented the first recycled packaging with the RAL quality mark „% recycled plastic“ at FachPack 2019 in Nuremberg. The packaging, which was developed for use with non-food products, is made from post-consumer secondary raw materials that come from household recycling collections such as the yellow bag.

The first use as standard packaging for a branded product of the building materials company Knauf started in the Netherlands at the beginning of October. „Environmentally friendly packaging“ was also the main theme of FachPack 2019. sustainable packaging solutions met with a great response.

„Deze emmer is gemaakt van 55% recyclingmateriaal“, is written in Dutch on the label of the new 22-kilogram bucket of the adhesive material „Betokontakt“, for which Knauf has for the first time developed a Recyclate container from the Jokey JPM185 range. In addition to the exact specification of the recycled content, the label contains the new RAL quality mark „recycled plastic“, on which a yellow bin and a yellow bag are depicted. The visualisation illustrates that this is plastic waste from collected sales packaging.

RAL quality mark as an important signal to consumers

„With the RAL quality mark „% recycled plastic“, which we introduced last year, members of the Gütegemeinschaft can document that plastics from the Yellow Bag, the Yellow Bin or similar household collection systems are recycled and used in sustainable packaging or products - an important signal for consumers,“ explains Dr. Ina-Maria Becker, Chairman of the Quality Association.

Together with her deputy Christina Schulz, she visited the Jokey stand at FachPack 2019 and was delighted to learn that Knauf will be using sustainable packaging with the RAL quality mark on the Dutch market from 1 October 2019.

Pioneer Knauf plans expansion to further packaging lines

Knauf is very proud of its pioneering role.

„Sustainability is the order of the day. We are certain that the market will react favourably to our new containers,“ explains Axel Ritz, Sales Manager Export & Industrial Customers at Knauf Bauprodukte.

For Knauf, the use of recycled packaging for „Betokontakt“ in the Netherlands is a first step towards meeting the Further packaging lines and expansion to other countries are to follow. A communication campaign is also planned to draw the attention of both professional users and private consumers to the sustainability of the new packaging.

Overall appearance as attractive as conventional solution

Jokey sees the fact that it has gained a renowned reference customer in Knauf as a significant success of the initiative it launched last year „Grey is the new green“. It promotes recycled packaging made from post-consumer secondary raw materials as a sustainable solution for filling non-food products.

In terms of performance, the material is almost as good as new plastics. equal. Only the grey colour was previously a threshold for acceptance, as white packaging has been standard for building material products for decades.

In the case of the packaging for Knauf, however, only one edge of the grey colour is visible on the outside, as the bucket was produced using the IML process. With a homogeneous PP label in white all round is printed. It is also combined with a green lid and a white handle made from virgin plastic. This makes the container, which is primarily made from recycled material, just as attractive as a conventional solution in terms of overall appearance.

Goal: Grey as the new standard packaging for non-food products

Jokey expects that with the RAL quality mark and the industry heavyweight Knauf as a reference customer, its „Grey is the new green“ initiative launched last year will gain momentum. The Recyclate concept as a solution for modern, sustainable plastic packaging is to be systematically expanded.

The company also has decades of experience in processing recycled materials. The first Jokey packaging buckets made from 100 per cent recycled material won an award at the German Packaging Competition back in 1993.

„We see Knauf's move as a pioneering step and hope that other bottlers will follow this path and soon turn a white standard into a grey standard for packaging applications in the non-food industry,“ says Michael Schmitz, Head of Marketing at the Jokey Group.
