Messe Düsseldorf will be using a comprehensive reusable cup system for the first time at the upcoming K 2025.
Only reusable cups made from modified polypropylene foam will be used in all catering facilities at the exhibition centre. The basis for this is a material from Borealis, which is based on chemically recycled ReOil raw material from OMV.
The initiative is a pilot project to reduce the number of disposable cups at major events. The aim is to gain insights for the implementation of sustainable, scalable reuse systems. Among other things, the trade fair will analyse the return behaviour of visitors and record the reuse and recycling rates.
„Reuse systems are key to making large-scale events more sustainable, and our foam solutions support this by enabling lightweight, durable and fully recyclable applications that use less material than conventional alternatives,“ emphasises Peter Voortmans, Vice President Marketing Consumer Products at Borealis. The cups are lightweight, material-efficient, fully recyclable and are provided without a deposit system. They can be returned to collection points on the site. Alternatively, they can also be reused privately.
The initiative is supported by partners from the plastics and packaging industry, including Arburg, Bockatech, MCC Verstraete and Mico Pac. They contributed to the production, labelling and design of the cups. The K 2025 (from 8 to 15 October in Düsseldorf) is organised under the motto „The Power of Plastics! Green - Smart - Responsible“ and sees itself as a global forum for sustainable plastics solutions.
