Kaufland is now offering 0.75-litre returnable wine bottles with a deposit in around 200 shops in southern Germany. The retailer is thus expanding its commitment to more sustainable packaging solutions. The bottles are subject to a 0.25 euro deposit and can be returned to all Kaufland reverse vending machines.
According to Kaufland, the production of a glass bottle causes almost half of the CO₂ emissions in wine production. The new reusable concept aims to significantly reduce these emissions, as the bottles are rinsed and refilled after being returned. „With the new reusable wine bottles, we are expanding our reusable range. For our customers, this means that they save themselves a trip to the glass container, do something for the environment and also receive a regional quality product,“ explained Markus Bretz, Head of Food and Beverage Purchasing at Kaufland.
Cooperation with Wein-Mehrweg eG
The new bottles were developed by the Wein-Mehrweg eG cooperative, which currently comprises 14 companies and represents around five per cent of German wine production. Regional red, rosé and white wines are available in the new bottles at Kaufland. The range is concentrated in shops in Baden-Württemberg and parts of Bavaria.
To accompany the deposit bottles, Wein-Mehrweg eG has also introduced a crate made from recycled material. The crate, which is subject to a 3.50 euro deposit, is accepted at Kaufland reverse vending machines throughout Germany, just like the bottles. The reusable bottles can be recognised by an embossing on the neck of the bottle and a reusable symbol on the label.
