KHS offers retrofitting for paper wrapping

Since 2020, the Dortmund-based KHS Group has been offering the option of having beverage cans wrapped in paper instead of film on packaging machines. Anyone who does not want to purchase a new machine straight away can now opt for a retrofit from the company.

KHS offers two alternatives for this: If the paper wrap is to permanently replace the previous use of shrink film as secondary packaging, only two modules need to be replaced and the machine layout can remain virtually unchanged. The wrapping module for the previous film processing will be replaced by the enhanced module, which can process paper. Furthermore, the shrink tunnel is replaced by a module that folds and glues the paper.

„Paper wrapping is still a relatively new form of secondary packaging. Many bottlers would like to leave all options open in view of future market developments. I therefore assume that the flexible combination machine is a very attractive option for our customers.“

Beverage producers who do not wish to forego flexibility with regard to secondary packaging can retrofit the KHS packaging system as an additional option for their existing machine. In this case, the paper wrapping module is adapted and the paper folding/gluing module is added. Once the modules are installed, changing the material does not require any modifications other than the standard format changes.

Wrapping module processes film and paper

"The conversion is easy to implement on all machine types in the Advanced series„ explains Uwe Bartholemy, Head of Technical Support Packaging in the Service Division at KHS. This is made possible above all by the modular design of the Innopack machines. What was still considered a novelty in the industry when it was introduced in 2000 has now established itself as the standard.

From a technical point of view, the Innopack packaging machines with shrink tunnels only require the existing wrapping module for film to be replaced with the enhanced module for paper wrapping. This can then process both materials. Packers without an existing film wrapping module will receive the new module as an extension.
