Tethered caps have been mandatory for all non-returnable PET bottles in the EU since July 2024. As a result, the variety of cap variants and thus the demand for inspection technology has increased significantly. Nikita Wall, Product Support Labelling & Inspection Technology at KHS: „Tethered caps were hardly in circulation before the EU obligation. Conventional systems therefore often reach their limits when it comes to closure monitoring.“ Furthermore, the wide variety of bottle and cap designs and increasing line outputs pose additional challenges.
The KHS Innocheck TSI system checks closures for integrity, correct fit and any damage. The system uses two cameras to create high-resolution 360° images of the PET container closures and analyses them independently with regard to the criteria. (Image: Frank Reinhold)
Optimised shutter control thanks to AI
With AI-based defect detection for tethered caps, the Dortmund-based full-service provider is now offering a smart solution to identify potential defects in the cap inspection. The system uses patent-pending algorithms to analyse images of bottle caps in real time. Cameras record the closures in high-resolution quality, while AI models analyse this data. The models adapt to new defect patterns through the use of deep learning. The AI-supported solution therefore increases both the accuracy and efficiency of the inspection.

„Our customers place very high demands on quality assurance. In intensive field tests, our AI-based error detection has proven that it fulfils these high requirements in full.“

Foundation stone for further projects
KHS has developed the new system especially for its proven Innocheck TSI closure monitoring system. Implementation is possible for both new and existing machines. KHS would like to AI will also be used for other inspection technology solutions in the future„We are currently discussing in the development team which systems it makes sense to use. AI solutions only make sense if the requirements are complex and they offer our customers clear advantages,“ emphasises Wall.
