The Würzburg-based cosmetics manufacturer Kneipp is cooperating with the Waiblingen-based start-up Rezemo in the production of fibre-based packaging for bath and body care products. The start-up previously produced coffee capsules made of wood.
The demands on the cosmetics industry are high: In addition to natural and high-quality ingredients, consumers are increasingly demanding sustainable packaging for creams, soaps and other products. With the development of wood fibre-based products, the company offers Rezemo offers an alternative to well-known plastics under the forewood brand. With Kneipp, the Würzburg-based manufacturer of bath, body care and health products, has now found a co-operation partner who is actively involved in the development of specific product ideas.
Problem solvers instead of problem creators
„The challenge with this project is to, using a bio-based material that was previously used to package a dry product such as coffee for predominantly liquid cosmetic products. After all, our packaging has to meet high standards in terms of stability and hygiene,“ explains Philipp Keil, Head of Packaging Materials Management at Kneipp. Rezemo coffee capsules are made from wood fibres, which are waste or by-products of wood processing, for example, classic sawdust, as well as binding agents made from plant starch. This means that the material is based 100 per cent on renewable raw materials and is completely biodegradable. The material will be used for the first time as part of the next Kneipp product launches this year.
When developing plastic-free packaging alternatives for the Kneipp range, the focus is on conserving natural resources and integrating the packaging material into closed cycles. „We have set ourselves the goal of ensuring that our packaging is completely recyclable. An alternative variant is biological cycles and therefore materials that can be composted. We are therefore delighted to be working with the Rezemo team,“ says Philipp Keil. „Our vision of developing packaging from a problem creator to a problem solver is an exciting and important challenge, which we are also pursuing via open innovation approaches, i.e. the targeted opening of internal innovation processes to the outside world. Sustainability is a task that we must tackle together across all sectors.“
„We are delighted to have found a partner in Kneipp with whom we can jointly apply and further develop our technology for the highly exciting field of cosmetics packaging,“ adds Julian Reitze, one of the founders of Rezemo. „If we succeed in doing this, we will have a real lever that can give an enormous boost to the sustainable development of the entire industry."
