What has long been possible for drinks bottles is now set to become a reality for cosmetics packaging. Kneipp is working on a deposit solution for personal care packaging in a pilot project with the Berlin start-up Circleback and other companies.
Kneipp has set itself ambitious targets for the sustainability of its packaging. In addition to the use of bio-based materials, the focus is on functioning packaging cycles in focus. In order to actively promote the recycling processes for personal care packaging, the company is cooperating with the Berlin start-up Circleback. Together with other partners, the company is working on setting up a deposit system modelled on the beverage industry.
„Getting enough recycled material for our packaging is becoming increasingly challenging. At the moment, too little high-quality recyclate is obtained from the existing recycling system via the Yellow Bag to produce packaging for the personal care industry across the board. As a cooperation partner from the very beginning, we therefore actively support Circleback's approach of setting up its own deposit system for bathroom products. The idea of transferring structures already learnt from the beverage industry to personal care products is great and could have a signal effect on our entire industry.“

The pilot project will initially be launched at Edeka Moch in ALEXA in Berlin before the end of the first half of the year. Customers can hand in empty cosmetics and personal care packaging at the Circleback deposit machine. They will receive up to 20 cents per pack via the Circleback app. Kneipp and participating partner brands in turn receive the recyclate from their packaging. The system is based on the national deposit system for drinks bottles, which ensures a recycling rate of more than 90 per cent. The aim is to establish a nationwide deposit system for plastic packaging from the bathroom.
