Koenig & Bauer Durst presents new modular printing press

The Varijet 106 from Koenig & Bauer Durst celebrated its world premiere with live demonstrations for customers and stakeholders in Radebeul near Dresden. The press combines inkjet and offset printing.

The Varijet 106 from Koenig & Bauer Durst celebrated its world premiere with exclusive live demonstrations for customers and stakeholders in Radebeul near Dresden, where the modular single-pass sheetfed digital press for the folding carton market was developed in collaboration between Koenig & Bauer and Durst.

The beta test will be accompanied by the proven expertise of Durst and Koenig & Bauer in the coming weeks. The first units of the Varijet 106 are expected to be delivered in the second half of 2022 installed at customer sites in Europe and America. Target groups are the pharmaceutical, cosmetics, tobacco and food industries as well as folding carton processors.

At the product launch, which also included presentations in the Customer Experience Centre, managers provided further insights into Koenig & Bauer's packaging strategy. There was also news on the progress of the Digitalisation of business processes for new products and services.

Combination of inkjet and offset

The B1 printing press with 5500 sheets per hour United Techniques from digital inkjet and classic offset printing. The Varijet 106 delivers superior print quality thanks to the water-based inkjet process. This digital printing system is the centrepiece of the joint development by Koenig & Bauer and Durst. The Varijet 106 platform is based on the high-performance Rapida 106 standard platform from Koenig & Bauer, the print head electronics from Durst, the proven inkjet process, the Durst workflow and RIP technology. This includes Durst's analytics, smartshop and workflow functions.

Display

The Varijet 106 is suitable due to the inkjet process with a total of seven water-based, food-safe colours (CMYK colour space plus orange, green and violet) especially for the food industry. It fulfils the strict requirements for the production of food-safe primary packaging using the company's own technology for water-based printing inks. The Varijet 106 can produce personalised and individualised print products and switch between short and medium runs.

Koenig & Bauer and Durst announced their co-operation and the establishment of the joint venture first announced in 2019. The Varijet 106 is the first product developed jointly by the two companies. Already in production and part of the Koenig & Bauer Durst portfolio are the Delta SPC 130 and Corrujet 170 for corrugated board packaging.
