In view of an impending gas shortage, the Würzburg-based printing press company Koenig & Bauer has adjusted its production. The process gas previously used in production could be replaced from the end of July 2022, and the heating energy at the large production sites could be gas-free by 1 September 2022.
By adapting the infrastructure, pipeline gas will be replaced by an energy mix consisting of LPG, heating oil and district heating, among other things, before the start of the heating season. As a consequence of a limited gas supply, unforeseen fluctuations in the electricity grid cannot be ruled out. Koenig & Bauer has therefore procured mobile emergency power systems (EPS) with high output, which are used when required. This means that the company's own production is largely secured at all European plants, even after a possible Russian gas supply stop.
Koenig & Bauer has also been working on sustainable energy concepts, and not just since the tense supply situation. The overriding goal is long-term independence from fossil fuels and maximum self-sufficiency. Particularly with regard to achieving the targets set by Koenig & Bauer sustainability targets and to maximise resilience to future fluctuations on the energy markets.
