Leuze is committed to reducing CO2 emissions

Leuze has been CO2-neutral in Germany since 2022 and has invested in various measures such as modernising its buildings.

Since 2022, Leuze in Germany has been CO2-neutral. To achieve this, the company has invested in various measures ranging from modernising its buildings and optimising its vehicle fleet to expanding the use of renewable energy.

For Leuze means taking responsibility for growth - also for the environment and society. In this context, the Sensor People have achieved a first sub-goal that they had set themselves: since 2022, the company in Germany has been CO2-neutral.

To this end, the company initially direct emissions and optimised on this basis at the relevant pointsThanks to extensive investment in new buildings and the modernisation of existing buildings, energy consumption has been significantly reduced. Also in the production, Leuze was able to significantly improve its energy efficiencyAmong other things, a massive expansion of the company's own renewable energy generation using photovoltaics has contributed to this. As a result, the Sensor People were able to reduce the amount of electricity they purchased from third parties by around half last year. With electricity, Leuze has been using 100 per cent green electricity for years. Part of this is supplied by Leuze's own leased hydropower plants.

The vehicle fleet has also been optimised: several partially and fully electric company vehicles are already in use. More will follow. Leuze also provides its customers and employees with charging stations. There are also employee offers such as the job bike, including the option of charging e-bike batteries at the company.

Sustainability projects

To minimise the unavoidable direct CO2-emissions, Leuze supports a programme to offset international forest conservation project in northern Brazil covering around 148,000 hectares. This is not reforestation, but a project that aims to preserve the rainforest as a natural CO2-storage facility. The forest conservation project reduces emissions by avoiding deforestation.

As an internationally active company, the Sensor People also want to make a global contribution to more sustainable business practices. The agenda therefore also includes indirect emissions in the supply chain. As with most companies, these make up a large proportion and are more difficult to influence. In this context, questions such as: Where do the components come from? How and under what conditions are they manufactured? Are these in line with Leuze's ethical and ecological ideas? What does this mean in terms of competitiveness? In order to obtain answers to these questions and initiate improvements, Leuze relies on regular audits not only in Germany, but also in manufacturing countries such as Asia.

In a further stage, the company is also planning to increase CO2-neutral. To this end, individual new sensor series in line with the „cradle to cradle“ approach. In this context, the Sensor People examine the extent to which a specific product contributes to CO2-emissions and what this means for system operators with Leuze sensors.

In addition to saving CO2 Leuze also protects the local ecosystem and is committed, for example, to the preservation of bees, biodiversity and species diversity on site. To this end, Leuze settled five bee colonies on the Leuze site around its company headquarters in Owen/Teck. The Leuze SenseBees are looked after by a beekeeper with many years of experience, who ensures that the Leuze bees are doing well.
