With Lidloc, Metsä Board, European virgin fibre paperboard manufacturer, presents a new paperboard cup concept: The patented Lidloc concept extends the conventional cup structure by a folding element that snaps into an integrated lid, making a separate plastic lid superfluous.

The innovative design creates completely new possibilities for the production, use and recycling of cups for street food and to-go applications.

Cyril Drouet, Metsä Board's Design & Innovation Director, who worked closely with his concept developers on this interesting project, recently presented the Lidloc concept to a group of invited guests at Packaging Innovations in Birmingham. He explained the advantages of the innovative design as follows:

„We have designed the cup so that it consists of one piece and does not require a separate plastic lid. It can be folded effortlessly into the right shape and has a secure locking mechanism. The integrated lid is leak-proof and opens up New branding opportunities, as it can be printed in one piece with the rest of the cup. The lid is equipped with an integrated mechanism for „sipping“ hot drinks, which is also ideal for drinking cold drinks with a straw.”

According to the company, Lidloc is an example of how Metsä Board aims to support its customers in presenting their brand through sustainable and innovative packaging solutions. All of Metsä Board's paperboard grades are made from Fresh fibres - one renewable raw material - manufactured. Their particular advantages are the traceability of their origin and their pure, white appearance, which is particularly desirable for food service applications.

Also on the Packaging Innovations in Berlin (5-6 April 2017), visitors can experience the new Lidloc concept live. Metsä Board will also be showcasing its lightweight paperboard grades, especially for foodservice applications, at Packaging Innovations Berlin.
