Lieferando is expanding its range of packaging to include plastic-free, biodegradable delivery boxes. Together with Huhtamaki and the material developer Xampla, the aim is to set new standards for sustainable food packaging.

Lieferando, the German brand of Just Eat Takeaway.com, has launched a new range of sustainable delivery packaging. In cooperation with the packaging manufacturer Huhtamaki and the British material developer Xampla, plastic-free, plant-based delivery boxes that are fully biodegradable and compostable are being launched on the market.

The central component of the packaging is the Morro coating from Xampla - the world's first coating made from plant-based protein for delivery packaging, according to the company. The innovative boxes are made from recyclable corrugated paper and are specially designed for fatty foods, which have usually been transported in plastic packaging until now.

Test runs and market launch

Following successful pilot projects with Just Eat for Business in the UK, initial tests have now also started in Germany. In Hamburg, Essen, Munich and Wiesloch, Lieferando is providing around 500 boxes free of charge to motivate restaurant partners to switch to the new packaging. The boxes are already available in the partner webshop for all 41,000 affiliated restaurants.

Sustainability as a strategic goal

The launch is part of Just Eat Takeaway.com's group-wide efforts to reduce the use of single-use plastic. „We are specifically looking for partners who share our vision of a plastic-free future,“ says Jaz Rabadia, Global Head of Responsible Business & Sustainability. The packaging solution is not only ecological, but can also be easily integrated into existing packaging processes.

Also Xampla CEO Alexandra French sees the cooperation as a milestone: „Together with Huhtamaki and Lieferando, we are setting new standards for environmentally friendly food packaging.“

Practical realisation

The boxes are designed for durability during the delivery process. They fulfil the requirements of the EU Single-Use Plastics Directive and, according to the manufacturer, offer a high level of thermal insulation and stability. Their use is particularly attractive for restaurants without their own packaging development.
