
Metsä Board has worked with partners on a new pizza board. The result is a board that, according to the company, saves around 30 per cent in weight and material, making it the lightest in its performance class worldwide.
Together with industry experts Metsä Board food-safe packaging, which is environmentally friendly and less material and less ink used.
„Compared to conventional packaging, we have saved around 30 per cent in weight and material. We use our virgin fibre quality MetsäBoard Natural WKL Bright with a basis weight of just 80 g/m2. Despite its lower weight, the pizza board has the necessary stability thanks to its E-flute structure and the purity required to transport a freshly baked pizza thanks to its production from virgin fibre. All corrugated cardboard layers are made from the same material, which also makes production logistics efficient.“

The visual design of the pizza carton was created by Futupack, while packaging producer Adara Pakkaus was responsible for its manufacture. The design of the pizza box was based on the high-resolution CMYK image enhanced by a bright green area and striking black lettering, which were implemented using special colour printing. Thanks to its degree of whiteness, the paperboard quality used, MetsäBoard Natural WKL Bright, allows high-quality CMYK printing. Overall, the Uncoated surface with its matt look and feel versatile possibilities. The material is suitable for producing a pure white corrugated board solution, as an external or internal ceiling, or as a fluting.
In the Comparison with traditional solutions made from recycled fibres the pizza cartonboard made from the virgin fibre quality Natural WKL Bright achieved up to 38 per cent weight reduction and up to 50 per cent reduction in CO2-footprint. It therefore offers an excellent solution for customers looking for more sustainable alternatives.
