LongLifeBag: Quality promise with test & seal

BAGS BY RIEDLE®, the specialist for paper carrier bags, has developed the first paper bag that has been tested for quality and durability by two independent testing institutes. Whether shopping bag, trade fair bag or bottle bag, the LongLifeBag is now available for all applications.

BAGS BY RIEDLE®, the specialist for paper carrier bags from Langenbrettach, has developed the first paper bag that has been tested for quality and durability by two independent testing institutes. Whether shopping bag, trade fair bag or bottle bag, the LongLifeBag is now available for all applications.

Many advertisers are unsettled by the savings resulting from the EU directive on the avoidance of plastic bags when using what is probably their most efficient advertising medium. Of course it is good for the environment to do without plastic bags in exorbitant quantities, no question about it. But we rarely find out whether the resulting advertising loss is offset by switching to paper bags, for example. After all, customers' willingness to pay for a nice paper carrier bag could also lead to a considerable increase in eye contact with the desired advertising message. Henry Ford already knew this: If you don't advertise, you die.

Volker Riedle, Managing Director of BAGS BY RIEDLE, has therefore selected and commissioned two independent testing institutes to scrutinise his LongLifeBag. As a quality and innovation leader, he is not afraid to put his paper bags to the test. The motivation for commissioning the tests was the clear intention to have its development tested for reliable and verifiable quality criteria

Certified testing institutions as partners

Graz University of Technology is an important university in the international technical and scientific research and education network. Within the framework of the Technical Research and Testing Centre (VAP) tests are carried out here in the specialist field of testing auxiliary materials, raw materials and finished products for paper, pulp, wood pulp and fibreboard production. The testing centre is accredited in accordance with EN ISO/IEC 17025.

As a research and service institute, the Paper Technology Foundation companies from all industries in the development and application of modern fibre-based solutions. Deutsche Akkreditierungsstelle GmbH confirms the competence of the Papiertechnische Stiftung testing laboratory in accordance with DIN EN ISO/IEC 17025 for the tests carried out for BAGS BY RIEDLE.

Strength and extensibility controlled

Various tests on the breaking strength, tensile strength and elongation at break of the paper used for the carrier bags were carried out by both testing institutes. Both the Strength in machine direction (MD: machine direction) as well as the Elasticity in transverse direction (CD: cross direction) is controlled.

A very special testing device was used at the Papiertechnische Stiftung for the dynamic strength test of the load-bearing capacity and handle strength of the LongLifeBag. This enables the load-bearing capacity of packaging to be tested at different lifting frequencies and drop heights under defined conditions. The load is not only applied by simply lifting and lowering, but also by lifting and dropping the packaging jerkily around the lifting motion.

An extreme situation was deliberately chosen for the test set-up. The paper carrier bag was filled with 15 kg and sandbags with a mass of 1 kg each were used as load weights. A special suspension bracket on the load capacity tester was used to create a realistic carrying situation. The lifting and dropping was carried out at a lifting frequency of 80 lifts/minute.

More than two dozen strokes of the RIEDLE® LongLifeBag without tearing the cord holder. There was also no damage to the bottom bonding. This is undoubtedly due to the combination of the large binding surface on the outside and the high load-bearing capacity of the fully bonded base plate with correspondingly high grammage on the inside.

High standard

Essential quality features are often no longer recognisable in the wide range of paper bags, paper carrier bags, paper bags and the like. With over 20 years of experience as a paper and printing technician, Riedle wants to send a clear signal here and provide decision-makers and users with verifiable and well-founded assistance.

Riedle's LongLifeBag offers many other advantages. The Minimum standard is a long-fibre, coated and laminated paper with a thickness of 190 to 240 g/m², equipped with a special surface quality for brilliant and abrasion-resistant printing results, even for motifs with high colour density and Colour saturation. The double edge cover and the corresponding Cardboard reinforcement are highly effective in preventing the cord from being torn out, but also prevent cuts to the user. The 10 mm thick soft cord with extra soft cotton filling offers highest wearing comfort even under heavy weight loads. Encapsulated ends prevent unattractive fraying. And for long-lasting pleasure in the harmonious and individual design of the brand ambassador, the individual cord colour can be selected from 170 variants. Long-standing clients include companies such as Bentley, Bosch, Fiat, Sony, Lagerfeld, Hilfiger, Lancaster, Telekom, Toshiba and Recaro.
