Mastering packaging challenges

At Fachpack in Nuremberg in September, Sappi will be showcasing its product portfolio for flexible packaging, wet glue labels, corrugated board and virgin fibre board. The motto of the trade fair appearance is „Futurproof“.

For more than 10 years Sappi produces a broad portfolio of packaging papers with integrated barriers against oxygen, grease, water vapour, mineral oil and aromas as well as additional heat-sealing properties. The papers offer optimum product protection. Thanks to the integrated barriers No additional coatings or laminations This meets the current market demand for alternatives to non-recyclable multilayer materials and plastic packaging. With the brand new barrier papers Guard ICC, Guard OHS and Guard Twist Gloss, Sappi is expanding its product family of functional papers.

Guard ICC is a packaging paper with a barrier coating on both sides and was developed for flexible packaging applications where Dimensional stability and protection on both sides are required. Guard ICC is used in the food sector, especially for the packaging of waffle ice cream. It is available in a grammage of 110 g/m². The Guard OHS barrier paper, available in the print finishes Natural, Silk and Gloss, has excellent oxygen and water vapour barriers. It has been specially developed to meet the requirements of confectionery packaging. It also has a Integrated heat sealability and therefore fulfils the requirements for both heat and cold sealing. It is suitable for various flexible packaging applications, such as flow wraps, sachets and pouches for the food and non-food sectors. The third paper in the group of innovative newcomers is Guard Twist Gloss. The one-side coated paper with a barrier coating on the reverse side was developed primarily for twisting applications in the confectionery industry. The paper has already delivered very good results in various tests on different packaging machines.

On the Specialist pack Sappi will also be showcasing its broad portfolio of uncoated and coated flexible packaging papers with good processing properties. The company is presenting its new Algro Finess C paper. The coated paper was specially developed for coffee packaging. It impresses with its appearance and its printing and processing properties. The new paper also effectively reduces folding and colour breaks, which can impair the appearance of the packaging at the POS. The company will also be showcasing its wide range of uncoated flexible packaging papers. The matt look and unrivalled feel of the papers are in line with the trend towards a more natural look and feel for flexible packaging.

Premiere at Fachpack

Parade Label WS is a wet and alkali-resistant wet-glue label paper that achieves outstanding printing and finishing results thanks to its high-quality surface. The glossy paper is available in basis weights from 65 to 80 g/m2. For the first time at Fachpack, Sappi will also be presenting a linen embossed version to the general public. Parade Label WS has already proven its high labelling performance in various qualifications. At the same time, the excellent printing and finishing results guarantee a high shelf impact and brand differentiation. Since the end of last year, Sappi has carried out successful practical tests with selected customers. Parade Label WS is produced at the Gratkorn (Austria) plant, where Sappi has invested tens of millions of euros to expand its labelling paper business in the long term.

The premium fresh fibre cartons from the Algro Design product family are characterised by their Flawless look and feel from. They are suitable for packaging applications in the luxury perfume, cosmetics and confectionery sectors. New to the portfolio is Algro Volume, a premium fresh fibre cartonboard with a fully coated top side, which scores with outstanding printing properties as well as excellent volume and stiffness. Algro Volume is available in both sheet and reel form and is primarily intended for high-quality packaging and demanding graphic applications such as advertising material, envelopes, cards, tags and tickets. It is suitable for a variety of finishing techniques including embossing, varnishing and foil lamination. Algro Volume is available in various grammages between 220 g/m² and 380 g/m² and is produced at the Sappi plant in Maastricht (Netherlands).

Sappi's Fusion portfolio is renowned for its impressive brightness, its degree of whiteness, its printability and its dimensional stability. With the addition of 200 g/m² to the range, manufacturers can now transfer the special properties of the product to new applications, such as rigid cardboard envelopes, sleeves, banderoles and much more.

Fusion Embossed is the embossed version of Fusion Topliner and is also characterised by exceptional brightness, a high degree of whiteness and an elegant, silky surface. It delivers brilliant embossing results, high stability and excellent creasing properties. Fusion Embossed is available in two different surfaces, linen and denim, in grammages of 100 g/m² and 115 g/m². Since the launch of Fusion Topliner 200 g/m² and Fusion Embossed, the two new products have been used successfully by selected customers.

Sappi has recently made a number of investments with which the company intends to position itself even better for the future. These include the innovative barrier coating system at the plant in Alfeld, the extensive modernisation of the Gratkorn site and the commissioning of a second e-boiler at the Maastricht plant.
