The aim is to reduce waste and plastic: McDonald's Germany is launching a live experiment with alternative packaging. In its restaurant in the Mall of Berlin, the company is showing what it is currently working on from 17 June to 26 June: A new packaging concept with more sustainable solutions to reduce waste.

Reusable instead of disposable, grass paper instead of burger boxes or ketchup in a waffle. For ten days, McDonald's Germany is experimenting in the „Better M Store“ and is testing which sustainable packaging solutions can be used sensibly in system catering. All guests who consume their food at the McDonald's restaurant in the Mall of Berlin can test the alternative packaging. And then give direct feedback via a survey tool.

„New solutions for disposable packaging first and foremost mean a change: not only for companies, but also for consumers. That's why we want to use this experiment to find out what is possible and where we may need to go into further development. After all, an innovative solution only works if it fits in with our operational processes in the restaurant, hygiene requirements and the tastes of our guests.“
Heike Bierweiler, Director Supply Chain of McDonald's Germany

The survey on sustainable packaging solutions will also be extended on McDonald's Germany's social media channels so that users can also take part in the discussion online. Sessions for detailed discussions with experts will also be held in the restaurant during the ten days. McDonald's will analyse the findings from the ten-day live experiment and incorporate them into its sustainability strategy.
