Meat packaging made from post-consumer plastics

In a joint project, DSM, SABIC, Cepsa, Fibrant and Viscofan have developed a multi-barrier film made of post-consumer plastics for the packaging of meat products.

In a joint project, DSM, SABIC, Cepsa, Fibrant and Viscofan have developed a multilayer barrier film made of post-consumer plastics for the packaging of meat products.

Recycled-based multilayer films enable the packaging industry to introduce more sustainable solutions without compromising on functional performance.

The new sustainable film produced by Viscofan consists of made of several layers of different polymers. DSM Engineering Materials supplies the certified recyclable polyamide (PA) Akulon CRC-MB, while SABIC supplies polyethylene (PE) from its Trucircle portfolio of recyclable solutions. Both products are based on post-consumer plastics that are converted into new raw material in the recycling process.

Multilayer barrier films made from certified recycled materials

Several partners in the value chain produce the polyamide Akulon CRC-MB as part of a collaboration and apply a mass balancing approach. SABIC initially produces certified circular benzene based on material from the feedstock recycling of mixed plastic waste. Cepsa uses this benzene to produce phenol, which Fibrant then uses to produce caprolactam EcoLactam, which is used in the production of DSM in turn is used to produce its polyamide. Finally, Viscofan combines polyethylene and polyamide to produce the new multilayer barrier film. All recycled materials within the value chain have the globally recognised ISCC Plus certification and do not need to be requalified.
