Spanish food retailer Mercadona has signed an agreement to acquire Logifruit, a provider specialising in the management of reusable transport packaging. With the acquisition, Mercadona aims to standardise its logistics processes and further increase the efficiency and sustainability of its supply chain. The completion of the transaction is still subject to approval by the relevant competition and regulatory authorities.
With the takeover, Mercadona is aiming to integrate all logistics processes more closely and realise additional synergies. According to the company, this should help to further optimise the use of resources and strengthen the focus of logistics on the principles of the circular economy. Logifruit has been a key partner in the retail group's reusable packaging system for many years.
The merger will see Logifruit's approximately 1,600 employees integrated into the Mercadona organisation. The company sees this as a further step towards consolidating its own logistics model, which has been focussed on innovation, efficiency and sustainability for around three decades.
Long-standing collaboration to be continued
David Cid, General Director of Logistics at Mercadona, recognised the role of Pedro Ballester, President of Logifruit, in the development of the joint project and the many years of collaboration. The integration into Mercadona's corporate structure should help to further increase the efficiency, innovative strength and sustainability of the logistics processes.
Pedro Ballester explained that Logifruit began working with Mercadona back in 1996 with the aim of developing a customised and competitive logistics offering. Three decades later, the company has achieved a high degree of specialisation and efficiency, which is to be further consolidated and expanded through the integration that has now been agreed.
