Metsä Board increases production capacity for folding boxboard

Metsä Board is expanding its production capacity for folding boxboard in Husum, Sweden. The modernisation of board machine 1 will increase the annual production capacity of folding boxboard by 200,000 tonnes.

The project to expand the production capacity for folding boxboard at Metsä Board's integrated pulp and board mill in Husum, Sweden, has been completed. The modernisation of board machine 1 (BM1) will increase the annual production capacity of folding boxboard by 200,000 tonnes to a total capacity of 600,000 tonnes.

This means that the BM1 in Husum the largest and most modern cartoning machine in Europe and further strengthens Metsä Board's position as a leading European supplier of folding boxboard.

The BM1 produces Folding boxboard that is lightweight without sacrificing strength. This reduces the consumption of raw materials and also helps to reduce the CO2 footprint of packaging. The expansion of the folding boxboard capacity is a Response to the growing demand for packaging materials made from renewable raw materials and is realised by extending the board machine and increasing the drying capacity.

However, the extension of the machine is only one part of the extensive project. Improvements were also made to other parts of the machine line. This will enable the company to further increase runability and quality consistency. Metsä Board upgraded the coating system outside the machine, to enable higher speeds and larger jumbo rolls. At the same time, the logistics for transporting the jumbo rolls between the board machines, the coating machine, the extrusion coating line and the slitter rewinder on site were fully automated. The additional capacity will mainly be for the North American and European markets where demand for Metsä Board's lightweight premium fresh fibre paperboard is expected to continue to grow. Husum BM1 produces market-leading, high-quality and lightweight folding boxboard with a grammage of 175-355 g/m2. The products are used for packaging dried and frozen foods, chocolate, confectionery, pharmaceutical and healthcare products, beauty care products, catering and graphic applications.
