Michel Giannuzzi, Chairman of Verallia, was unanimously elected as the new President of the FEVE (European Container Glass Federation) at the organisation's Annual General Meeting. Giannuzzi takes office at a time of profound transformation in the glass packaging industry towards greater sustainability and decarbonisation.

The European glass packaging industry produces over 20 million tonnes of glass annually in 23 countries and provides 125,000 jobs. With a commercial value of over 140 billion euros for glass-packed products, the sector is a mainstay of European industry, according to the report.

„Decarbonisation needs a political tailwind“

During his two-year term of office, Giannuzzi intends to drive forward the 100 or so decarbonisation projects already launched in the industry - including hybrid electric ovens, eco-design initiatives and investments in recycling infrastructure.

However, FEVE criticises the political framework: High energy prices, inadequate infrastructure for industrial electrification and a lack of regulatory planning certainty are currently hindering a rapid transformation. Outgoing President Martin Petersson (Ardagh) is calling for a „realistic political pace“ that is aligned with the industry's investment-intensive innovation cycles.
