TrinamiX GmbH, a subsidiary of BASF, is presenting a mobile NIR spectroscopy solution at the Plastics Recycling and Sustainability Conference Europe (PRSE) 2024 in Amsterdam. The new application has been specially developed for the identification of mono- and multi-material films.

The demand for mobile analytics in the field of film recycling is increasing. TrinamiX enables plastics and textiles to be recognised at the touch of a button. The solution consists of a robust, mobile NIR (near-infrared) spectrometer, a user-friendly App with cloud-based data analysis and a connected customer portal, which can be used to export measurement data and download results reports.

The solution for plastic identification can reliably Recognise over 30 types of plastics, including standard plastics such as HDPE, LDPE, PP, PET, PS, PVC and engineering plastics such as PA, ABS, PC and PLA. It is also able to quantify mixtures of PE and PP.

At the trade fair, TrinamiX will be presenting a new application specially designed for the Identification of multi-material and mono-material films was developed. The two types of film require different recycling technologies, but cannot simply be distinguished visually. The mobile solution from trinamiX provides information about the material of the films at the touch of a button and can be used by recyclers to, for example are used directly at the incoming goods inspection.

„Recyclers can now directly assess whether the plastic waste on offer is recyclable and which recycling process is the most suitable. This means that more films can be returned to the cycle in future and do not have to be thermally utilised because their composition is unknown. This is another important step on the way to a complete circular economy for plastics.“

Mobile quality control along the production and recycling process

Quality control is important wherever plastics are produced, processed or reused. An essential element for efficient plastics recycling is the Sorting mixed plastic waste into pure waste streams, as impurities can impair the quality of the recycled products. Reliable material identification with the mobile NIR spectrometer from TrinamiX significantly simplifies the inspection of incoming materials and the release of sorted plastic and textile bales. It also supports non-conformance management and the efficient management of complaints, reducing the risk of costly errors and delays.

The solutions not only enable companies to carry out spot checks, but also to the comprehensive documentation of incoming and outgoing material flows, their visualisation and analysis and thus create comprehensive transparency for manufacturers and recyclers of plastics.
