Paper and packaging manufacturer Mondi is launching a range of recyclable barrier papers that can be used as a substitute for plastic films and laminates and are fully integrated into the company's value chain

Mondi explains that this range of certified, recyclable barrier paper solutions has been designed with product protection in mind. It can also be used in existing filling lines for tubular bags.

The AegisPaper range from Mondi reduces the amount of plastic used by replacing it with a renewable raw material. This is characterised by specific mechanical properties such as puncture resistance, flexibility, printability and protection against external influences.

Barrier papers for many applications

The coating technologies applied to these papers create adapted barriers against grease and water vapour and also ensure sealability. According to the company, AegisPapers are suitable for numerous packaging applications such as dry food, frozen food, pet food, confectionery, secondary packaging, toys, e-commerce, flower packaging and DIY.

The functional barrier paper can replace plastic packaging commonly used for FMCG and consumer products. As a first step, Mondi will collaborate with a European manufacturer of dry pasta to reduce its plastic consumption by 90 % and save 7.5 tonnes of plastic film annually for one of its product ranges. This pasta packaging and other commercialised solutions will be launched in the first half of 2021.
