Together with bicycle manufacturer Polana Bikes, Mondi has developed a new paper-based packaging solution for shipping high-quality bicycles. The aim of the collaboration is to reduce plastic, improve product protection and at the same time optimise logistics processes and the unpacking experience for customers.
The new packaging solution combines corrugated cardboard boxes with customised paper inserts and so-called ProtectorBAGs. These are prefabricated protective paper bags that protect sensitive bicycle components such as frames, handlebars or wheels from scratches, knocks and dirt during transport and storage. According to Mondi, the materials used are recyclable and can be disposed of via existing waste paper systems in Europe.
Focus on reusability and production processes
The packaging was developed in close collaboration with the Polana Bikes production team. A key element is the ability to insert the bikes into the packaging from above. According to the company, this should increase efficiency along the production line and simplify the packaging process. In addition, closures made from recycled plastic are used, which allow the packaging to be opened and reused several times.
According to Polana Bikes, it had previously struggled with bicycles slipping out of place and damage during transport. Production Manager Miłosz Pytel explained that, in addition to product protection, the first impression when unpacking also plays a key role. The new solution should combine both: functional protection and a high-quality appearance.
Development as part of the ThinkBox method
The packaging was created as part of Mondi's so-called ThinkBox method, in which packaging concepts are developed together with customers. The aim is to align packaging more closely with specific requirements in production, logistics and utilisation. Mondi sees the collaboration with Polana Bikes as an example of co-operative development processes in the field of sustainable packaging solutions.
