Mondi produces components for face masks

Mondi is converting a production line at its Gronau plant so that it now manufactures soft, elasticated straps used for face masks.

As World market leader in packaging and paper Mondi intends to Covid-19 epidemic in the production of important Supply materials and components participate. The Personal Care Components Team has now found a way to convert a production line at the Gronau plant in Germany so that it Elasticated retaining straps which are used for face masks and are used by medical professionals and consumers worldwide.

Mondi's plant in Gronau is normally involved in the production of materials used in hygiene products. However, the plant was able to quickly adapt one of its production lines to the manufacture of a three-ply, laminated retaining strap which holds together an elastic plastic film between layers of soft non-woven fabric. Mondi supplies the holding tapes to its customers who manufacture masks, on castors. The tapes are then cut to size and attached to both sides of a mask.

„Mondi Gronau is working to provide tapes that will be attached to more than one billion nonwoven face masks. As there is an increasing demand for this type of face mask, we are expanding our capability to meet this demand. By producing this soft rubber band, our customers are able to produce more masks to meet the growing demand,“ says Dr Michael Trinkaus, Director R&D and Application Technology Personal Care Components at Mondi.
