Nespresso Canada and Éco Entreprises Québec (ÉEQ) are now introducing the green bag recycling programme in all Québec municipalities with a sorting centre. This makes Québec the second province in Canada, after Prince Edward Island, where aluminium capsules can be recycled nationwide via household waste collection.

Nespresso Canada is sending a clear signal for the circular economy with the introduction of its green bag programme in all Québec communities concerned. This is the company's response to the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) that has been in force since the beginning of 2025 and the modernisation of the province's recycling collection system.

A system allows used Nespresso capsules to be collected in the green bag and then recycled with household waste. The capsules are made of aluminium, which is completely recycled. The coffee grounds contained in the bags are used for biomethanisation in Québec. The green bags are available free of charge with every online order of Nespresso products, in stores or via the Nespresso Club.

Cooperation with ÉEQ enables comprehensive solution

According to Nespresso, Québec was already a pilot region for the green bag programme in 2016. „The nationwide expansion has been a priority for us for years. The response from consumers and communities reinforces our commitment to sustainable solutions,“ said Carlos Oyanguren, President of Nespresso Canada. The aim is to further combine quality and sustainability.

Maryse Vermette, President and CEO of Éco Entreprises Québec, also sees the cooperation as an important step: „This take-back and recycling solution is a direct result of extended producer responsibility. It strengthens the dynamics of the circular economy in Québec and makes it easier for the population to dispose of aluminium capsules correctly.“
