CCL Label has introduced EcoShear, a new adhesive technology for self-adhesive labels on disposable glass bottles. The innovation is designed to improve glass recycling and significantly reduce glass waste.
In 2024, the average collection rate for glass packaging in the EU was 80.2 per cent. However, even with high return rates, the choice of labels can be decisive in determining whether the glass is recycled to a high standard or utilised as waste. CCL Label, a global provider of speciality labels and packaging solutions, is launching EcoShear, a new solution that has been specially developed for single-use glass bottles and jars.
„Although glass recycling already works well, there is potential for optimisation - especially when it comes to removing labels,“ says Anja Rockstroh from the Development and Technology department at CCL Label in Meerane. According to the company, EcoShear enables labels to be removed with virtually no residue in the recycling process, thereby helping to improve the quality of the recycled glass.
Labels stick less - glass quality increases
Self-adhesive film labels are widely used in the food and beverage industry as they offer a clear, moisture-resistant and visually appealing solution. However, conventional film labels can disrupt the recycling process as they adhere strongly to the glass and are not completely removed - leading to devaluation or rejection of the material.
EcoShear counteracts this: The new adhesive technology allows labels to be almost completely separated from the glass during the recycling process. This reduces the amount of glass that has to be downcycled or sent to landfill. At the same time, the yield of high-quality recycled glass is increased.
Focus on the industry's sustainability goals
In addition to waste avoidance, EcoShear also supports energy efficiency in the recycling chain, according to the manufacturer. Less impurities and rejects mean less energy is required for melting down. According to CCL, the solution is also compatible with existing systems for adhesive labels as a so-called „drop-in“ approach - a simple changeover should be possible.
