PulPac and Future Materials Sweden have developed a Snus can made from Dry Moulded Fibre for the brand Helwit. This innovation aims to break the dominance of plastic in this segment, it is said.

The market for snus cans, traditionally dominated by plastic, faces a potential revolution. PulPac and Future Materials Sweden jointly with Yoik AB, a new packaging solution has been developed, based on Dry Molded Fibre technology. This development could fundamentally change the way snus cans are produced, it is stated.

Innovation in snus packaging

The new snus can for the Helwit brand is made of Dry Molded Fibre, a technology developed by PulPac that enables the production of solid fibre packaging with low resource consumption. Future Materials Sweden has signed a licensing agreement with PulPac, to commercialise this technology and transfer it to industrial production.

Snus cans must meet demanding requirements due to their frequent use. The new fibre packaging meets these requirements with high dimensional accuracy, a consistent fit, and a premium appearance. The concept was developed to protect the product and meet expectations for surface quality and tolerances.

Validation and industrialisation

The project is currently in a structured product validation phase. Performance testing and trials in Yoik's bottling environment are part of the next development steps. In parallel, the partners are planning the industrialisation and scaling strategy to ensure a smooth transition from the validated concept phase to scalable production.

Morgan Svensson, founder of Future Materials Sweden, highlights the positive reception of the concept: „The interest from Swedish and US actors shows the considerable volume potential. From the outset, we have focused on a commercially viable solution, and the cost position supports industrial implementation.“

A new way for Yoik

Tobias Björneskog, co-founder of Yoik AB, explains the importance of packaging innovation for the company: „Helwit stands for innovative approaches. The development of a fibre-based snus can with PulPac and Future Materials is an important step on our journey to explore new formats and challenge established norms.“
