
CelluComp and RyPax, two companies from the fibre packaging industry, have developed a bottle solution that consists entirely of fibres and does not use plastic. The inner coating is biodegradable and renewable.
After years of perfecting its own microfibrillated cellulose product, Curran , made from the waste stream of root vegetables, Scotland-based CelluComp and Asia-based RyPax, which makes moulded fibre packaging, are driving the industry forward by developing the Combining the production of plant-based packaging with a highly renewable raw material - for a bottle consisting only of fibres.
The important step was the development of a innovative cellulose fibre made from a blend of curran, bamboo and bagasse. This material is strong and has minimal porosity. It allows a thin, impermeable coating to be applied to the inside of the bottle, which makes it

The solution is currently designed for water and powder substances, but the partnership is intended to Scale production for industrial applications in beverage, beauty, health, medical, food and other retail brands, to help manufacturers deliver a more sustainable product to reduce waste and meet consumer, government and their own sustainability goals. In the future, RyPax and CelluComp will work closely with DTI explore further fibre packaging solutions, including fibre screw threads, closures, even thinner coatings and a more complex type of branding on bottles for their customers.
